We should have known better....

...than to have camped for the night near a forest in France in the autumn during a weekend, it’s that time of year when rootin tootin mountain men spend their free time hunting critters, otherwise known here as “la chasse”. I was rudely awoken at around 06:15 to car doors banging, dogs howling, and raised voices and as I peeked through the van blinds I could just make out hairy men carrying rifles, smoking and kissing each other, all a bit too much for such an unearthly hour so it was back to sleep.

As the cacophony increased with more cars arriving, more raised voices etc etc at around 08:20 we decide to get up and breakfast, leaving our forest idyll for a more tranquil Cannes, .....or so we thought.

It turns out that today of all days is the day they decide to close the only road worth visiting and hold a marathon from Nice finishing in Cannes with 12000 runners taking part who all seem to be taking it very seriously indeed, not one person is spotted wearing tights with an emu body round his waist and an emu head attached to his hands, or for that matter is anybody wearing any fancy dress costume what so ever. Must be just us Brits that put ourselves through that sort of non-sense.

After spotting at least 115 boats and a great number villas in excess of 4,000,000 euros that we would like to own, we leave Cannes and head up the coast through Juan les pins with its famous Hotel du cap-eden roc, to Antibes which unlike a lot of the other Riviera towns has some character left.

yes they are blue snails crawling up the walls.

and a quick trip through Nice - the first of many

It’s very difficult to find anywhere round here to wildcamp for the night as it’s all so built up so we end up in a campsite in Villeneuve-loubet-plage. Not impressed.
