Durness to Dunnet head

While the rest of the country drowns we bathe in glorious sunshine and enjoy blue cloud free skies on the northern coast of Scotland.

Just outside the town of Durness is a free tourist attraction, Smoo caves, there is an option to take a guided tour which involves a boat trip for a very reasonable £3.

At the visitor centre next to the free car park are toilets which we make use of, proudly hanging on the door is a certificate announcing that they achieved a 4 star award for cleanliness and Scotlands best toilets award for 2010, wow !!!
Continuing on our journey eastwards we travel inland down the shoreline of loch Hope and arrive at the “Dun Dornaigil Broch” which is a 2000 year old iron-age storage/fortified tower, amazingly parts of it still survive.

After lunch we arrive in the coastal town of Tongue and take a drive up a small winding road to get a view of the Rabbit Islands.

Further east is the town of Thurso, a bit pikey but we need to buy some stuff so off we go, first stop involves purchasing a new tv antenna lead and then 2m of elastic , don’t ask. To purchase the latter we find ourselves in a strange shop that can only be described as selling “stuff”, the woman behind the counter insists that she has some elastic somewhere and refuses to let us leave until she has found it. Ten minutes later she appears with two small packets, “there yer go” she says “I knew I had some somewhere, that’ll be £1.40 please”, “not sure if I have that much in change” I say, fumbling in my wallet. Not wanting to lose a sale, “Just give me whatever change you have then” she says.

£1.17 changes hands and both parties are happy.

We bid farewell to Thurso just as six drunken teenage youths start accosting some poor girl driving a yellow citroen saxo whilst she’s sitting at the traffic lights.

We arrive at Dunnet head the most northerly point in mainland Britain and wildcamp nearby under clear blue skies.
