Budapest – day 2

Budapest is one of those great European cities that has to be visited, it’s a hassle free place that is relatively inexpensive in comparison to most other European capitals, transport although old and rickety with an out of date payment system works well and gets you where you want to go. If you are a museumaholic then this is the place for you, in fact the whole of Hungary is full of museums, every town seems to have at least three.

Day 2 is a more relaxing day which starts off with an underground train trip into central, a short walk to an old cog railway

which takes us a few km up into the Buda hills high above the sprawling metropolis, another short walk to a bizarre mode of transport, a narrow gauge railway

that runs 12km up even higher into the hills (a throwback from communist days, this was something that was enjoyed so it stayed) the bizarre thing is that it is run by children from 10 to 14 with the exception of the driver. They sell the tickets inspect them, man the 9 stations and everything else train / station related (with a little adult supervision). Find out more about it http://www.gyermekvasut.hu/english/page.php?16

Seems as though the majority of the people on the train were the families of the children working on them.

There's a lot of saluting going on as every train pulls in and out of the stations.

At the end of the line another stroll takes us to a viewpoint with a view down to the city.

We then take the train back four stops and walk to a chairlift

which takes us back to the edge of suburbia where we board a bus back to the city centre.

A top day out.
