The aircon express bus with worn shock absorbers drops us off on the main road, it’s a short walk to the village of Cherating
which according to the guide books is a laid back arty surfy sort of place although in reality it’s very run down and the people are so laid back that they’ve lost interest, but it’s still a nice spot and home to Malaysias first clube med resort.
We soon find somewhere to stay for the night, not quite on the beachfront but for £10 we have aircon a shower and a double bed with a couple of geckos thrown in to keep the mozzies at bay.
First thing to do is try and get a boat trip in the mangrove forest organised and then a stroll down to the beach
and then find a nice shady spot to relax by the river.
Next morning and we set off on our boat trip which is better done at low tide, the waterways through the forest are amazing
and we manage to see a couple of small monitor lizards
and some deadly poisonous mangrove vipers.
And quite a lot of kingfishers but they are far too quick to photograph.
Leaving Cherating we head further south to the next large town, Kuantan which has a very impressive mosque,
here in town we try to arrange a trip to lake Chini but all the tour agencies and tourist information are closed until Monday so we take to a hotel for the night to plan our next move.
