Basquing in it

Well it’s good to be back in the south west of France after just over 5 years since we left our Pyrenean life behind. Our typically Basque menu started with prawns and calamari, then for me marmitako (nothing to do with marmite, it’s tuna, potatoes, peppers and onions) Jo had her usual scallops and prawns, followed by gateau basque (a bit like Bakewell tart but better) and washed down with a bottle of Navarre red. A very noisy night sandwiched between the railway station and the main road within earshot of platform announcements, screeching trains, revving engines and two sets of church bells. Leaving St Jean de Luz we head for the Spanish border where we’re confronted by confusing road signs in not only French and Spanish but Basque as well (far too many x’s and z’s in words to make any sense and what a crazy font as well). The locals seem friendly, all except this one.
