After a rather rude awakening by loud French people stopping off for a smoke at 04:43 not much sleep follows and we get on the road again at 08:30 until we realise that we forgot to put our alarm clock forward an hour so the real time is 09:30, so maybe we did have a good nights sleep after all.
Stopping off for fuel and off to use the toilets only to overhear in the next cubicle a loud and very stressed conversation going on, there really are some places where you shouldn’t be using your mobile phone especially if you eat plenty of roughage as the guy next door obviously did.
As we are in the area we decide to make a bit of a detour to visit the “Parc regional des volcans” in the Auvergne region.
Up and up we climb and through the sunlight there appears to be some glitter on top of one called Puy du dome,
we drive further upwards to investigate until the glitter turns to snow and due to blizzard conditions we’re forced back down the same route we came.
Abandoning the volcano idea,(after all we saw plenty in Indonesia), we head back on the auto-route south to Millau, back on track and the suns shining once more. The road seems to be steadily climbing and we’re amazed to see a sign on the road telling us we’re at 850m above sea level, the weather starts to deteriorate over the next 40km as follows
unlike the other carriageway which is well and truly stuck,
snow ploughs fight their way through and past us to keep the roads moving and we steadily start to descend down to under 600m where the snow turns to rain and mist which is when we arrive at Millau to view the thing we’ve driven all this way to see, the Millau viaduct, here’s a photo of it, or at least that’s where it’s supposed to be.
We stop for the night in the town of Millau in a special free motorhome parking place with about 15 others and as its my birthday we’re out for a meal, so I’ll bid you all goodnight now.
