We cross the Alps from France into Italy using the St Bernard pass where we see a dog of the same name running around on top looking for some poor stranded mountaineer.
(somebody had stolen his barrel of brandy though)
the pass is just south of Mont Blanc which we get a clouded view of.
The first lake we encounter is Lake d’Orta
where we are forced to stay in a campsite due to the lack of suitable parking spots.
Moving on the next day we head for Lake Maggiore
where we find a free parking site for motorhomes in the lakeside town of Verbania where we just have to go out and sample some real pasta.
Next day and it’s a drive round lake Maggiore
to Lake Como, driving up the western side where there is nowhere to stop and look at the views, something which we discovered when we were down on the Italian Riviera last November, however we pass some stunning villages and scenery.
Seems as though the whole of Italy has a speed limit of 50kmh wherever you go (unless on the toll motorways).
We pitch up for the night on the smaller lake to the north, Lake Mezzola where we decide to stay for a couple of nights as it has a nice view, a wifi connection and it’s free.
