Phuket, more like Pooket !!

We arrive on our "island idyll" to find all those dreams of crystal clear blue seas with white palm fringed beaches completely shattered.

Time travel back to 1989 and on the stores office wall of the vehicle workshops at 16mu RAF Stafford is a calendar titled “Beaches of the world”, granted it’s an old one dating back from 1983 but Norman the storeman likes it and changes the page on a weekly basis showing a different beach. I can still remember the Phuket page and the image has always stayed with me, however this is what we find now.

We’re staying at Kata beach on the south west of the island and the whole place seems to have modelled itself on Blackpool, but without the kiss-me-quick hats and sticks of rock, here it’s tuk tuks made to measure suits and massages, one neon sign brags of offering “willy massages”.

We did find one good angle to take a nice shot of the beach, and night was approaching.

The beaches are filthy and there’s rubbish strewn everywhere, we chat with some other tourists who also feel let down by what they have discovered here, everything is overpriced and of very poor quality, food, customer service and accommodation wise, it seems as though the people here have given up trying, I guess they must have had it too good for too long and not adapted with the resat of the world. It’s very sad and we’re certainly glad to be leaving early tomorrow morning for the island idyll of Koh Phi Phi.

Oh, browsing the interweb earlier and found this story about the train line we were on in Vietnam around the same time.
